PHYSICAL EDUCATION
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN LOWER ELEMENTARY
The Lower Elementary Physical Education program at TMS focuses on the principles of basic movement and establishing life skills through physical activity.
Students demonstrate traveling in a variety of different ways using different pathways. Running, skipping, galloping, jumping, hopping, and sliding are examples of some of the traveling skills performed in the gym. In addition, students work on their throwing, catching and kicking skills. The basics of many sports and activities are developed to prepare students for the introduction to organized sport and team play in the higher levels.
Students learn the physical skills while enhancing their knowledge of working with others, fairness, team play, self-discipline, goal setting and leadership. They learn the importance of physical activity and fitness. The Physical Education Department instills a lifelong enjoyment for physical activity in an environment that is non-competitive, enhancing the element of fun.
Activities include cooperative games, partner and group work and individualized movement and exploration. The program is modified to ensure that every child has the ability to perform the given task. We welcome difference and exceptionalities in the gymnasium and on the field.
The children at this level receive physical education classes twice in a eight-day cycle for one hour at a time. They are expected to change into the TMS gym uniform for full class participation. Students are assessed on participation, teamwork and skill development.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION IN UPPER ELEMENTARY
The Physical Education Program is designed to contribute to the students’ present personal levels of health and fitness and to help prepare them for a lifelong involvement in physical activities to improve the quality of their lives.
Students will have the opportunity to develop fundamental and specific sport skills, as well as acquire knowledge of rules and strategies for team and individual activities. There will also be an emphasis on sport safety, enjoyment and sportsmanship.
The Physical Education Program will be organized around a number of different activities. The physical education classes will involve general fitness, skills practices and actual games.
The primary aim of the Physical Education Program is to develop, in each student, a sense of fair play, sportsmanship, and a love for physical activity as part of a healthy lifestyle.
The students in Grades 7 and 8 also receive Health education classes with the physical education teacher. These classes provide the students with the knowledge and skills to help them maintain a healthy life style. The students will also work on decision-making skills as well as problem solving strategies. The components covered are healthy eating, growth and development, personal safety and injury, and substance use and abuse.
House League Program
TMS offers an in-school House League program to students in Grades 3 to 8. Once a week during lunch break students may sign up to play in this league. Once signed up, students are placed on a team. We divide the students into three divisions:
• Grades 3 and 4
• Grades 5 and 6
• Grades 7 and 8
Students are given an opportunity to further work on their leadership skills, teamwork, sportsmanship, and individual skill development while participating in a variety of sports.
TMS COLLEGE Physical Education
In physical education, students continue to be challenged with experiences and situations that help foster the enjoyment of Physical activity and a commitment to healthy living. They are challenged through both team and individual sports as well as through cooperative games. They also learn fundamental skills while learning offensive and defensive strategies in these game situations.
In health they focus on personal goal-setting, living skills required to respond to matters related to personal safety, body image, self-esteem, drug use, healthy eating and sexuality. This program will help students become confident lifelong practitioners of healthy lifestyles. In a positive and challenging environment the students will grow intellectually, physically and socially.
